A bit about me & my work

My work - I work using freehand machine embroidery.I use a very basic & old sewing machine, no fancy gadgets or programmes here! freehanding allows me to 'draw' with my machine needle which means that every piece of work is unique. I also incorporate raw edge applique into my work, I love this, it allows me to use up the smallest scraps of leftover fabrics & by its nature adds to the quirky feel of the finished pieces.
I mostly work with vintage, unwanted & unloved fabrics, there's a fascination in giving them a new lease of life but also use a lot of wool fabric, woven in England.

Me - I am a textile artist born, bred and now based again in the beautiful county of Northumberland. After returning here - I was living and working in London - with my three small children (all grown now!) I decided that self employment was the best way for me to use my degree, indulge my love of design, art and craftsmanship while enjoying being with and bringing up my young children. I was aware that my work had to have commercial appeal and over the past 20 years have developed the Oscar & Toots brand under which umbrella (a very large one) I create affordable unique pieces that can be used and enjoyed. All work is hand made by me and so each piece, even if a repeated design, is a one off. I am passionate about my work and as well as work for sale on my site I enjoy working to commission.

I believe that wherever possible we should buy locally, support local producers, buy handmade, recycle, re-use and be generally aware and considerate of the environment in which we all live. I'm not at all obsessive about it, I just try to do my bit and now I use recycled and ethically sourced materials in my work and have eventually managed to source recycled or degradable packaging. I am proud of the service I offer and enjoy working closely with my customers to create work that can be treasured. Hope that didn't all sound too over the top and hope you like my work! Christine Swailes BA Hons MD Design By the way - Oscar is the cat and Toots is the dog, both recycled and both adorable. |
